Here is another wine in my quest to find wines rated at 90 points or above and selling for $20.00 or less.
I’ll admit that I am not a big Merlot drinker. In fact, I don’t think there are any Merlots in my wine cellar. Not sure I can explain why that is. I guess I need to correct the situation and add some Merlots to my collection.
2013 Markham Vineyards Napa Valley Merlot
This is another wine I found at Chalet Party Shoppe on County Road 17 in Elkhart. This wine was actually $20.99…a tad over our $20.00 limit.
The wine comes from one of the oldest wineries in Napa Valley. Today’s Markham Winery was original founded in 1874 by French immigrant Jean Laurent. In 1978 Bruce Markham purchased the old Laurent Winery along with several others and created Markham Vineyards. In 1988 the winery was sold to the Mercian Corporation and underwent a multi-million dollar renovation. Today the winery continues to produce highly-rated wines.
This wine was rated by various wine critics as follows:
- Wine Spectator: 91 points
- Cellar Tracker: 89 points
- Wine Enthusiast: 88 points
I would rate the wine in the 90-point range.
I found the nose of the wine a little subdued but it did open after sitting in my glass for awhile, producing hints of red fruit. On the palate the wine offered tastes of fruit, maybe a little cola and vanilla. The finish was tannic, a tad spicy and of an ample length. The mouth feel was chewy and coating.
The drinking window of this wine should extend for another five years. Around 2018 it will be a very tasty wine.
I enjoyed the wine. It had good balance, wasn’t overly fruity and it just tasted good. Our friend Stan Minden at Chalet made a good pick when he selected this wine. I recommend you give it a try.
Some Good News
Our old friend Dave Thompson, former wine buyer at City-Wide Liquors in South Bend/Mishawaka, has returned to his former position. As many of you know Dave left City-Wide for awhile to travel the world. He will be at City-Wide through the holidays at least. Dave and I had a fun time tasting a number of wines this week. He is very knowledgeable and has a great palate. It was quite enjoyable to catch up with him again. Stop by City-Wide and say hello if you get a chance.
