My friend Tom Welsh, general manager and partner at Tapastrie restaurant in downtown South Bend, called some weeks back and asked if I would help out the restaurant by being their Celebrity Chef for the YMCA of Michiana’s Greatest Chefs of Michiana fundraiser. In a weak moment (I seem to have a lot of those), I said, “Sure…what do I have to do?” All the while trying to figure out how I was going to squeeze another thing into my already packed schedule.
Nonetheless this is a good cause and helps children in our community. This is the seventh year the event has been held and the second year Tapastrie has participated. I am pleased to be teamed up with Tapastrie chef Tony Nafrady to form Team Tapastrie.
Here is how the event works: This year there are a total of 11 restaurants and celebrity chefs teamed up to raise $100,000 over the next few weeks. Each restaurant comes up with a signature dish for the event. Tapestries’ special dish, created by Chef Tony, is Panko Fried Feta Cheese Triangles garnished with Green Grape and Red Onion Jam and Minted Honey. You can try it at the restaurant through the month of February.
Also, throughout the month of February you get to cast your vote for your favorite restaurant team (of course yours should be Team Tapastrie) and dish. Here is a list of all the teams. To cast a vote you agree to donate a minimum of $37.00 per vote. You can vote here and cast as many votes as you like for any or all of the teams. The deadline for voting is Saturday, February 25, at 10:00 pm.
The event concludes with a Great Chefs of Michiana Gala on the evening of February 25, starting at 6:30 pm at the Century Center. There is a cost to attend the Gala…individual tickets are priced at $125.00 each or you can purchase a 10-person table for $2,500.00 or a six-person for $1,000.00. Sponsorship opportunities are also available for this event. You can find out about all of the above by contacting Nikole Constas by email or phone at 574-287-9622 or visit the website for more information or to “vote for Team Tapastrie.”
This event raises $200,000.00 annually to fund programs offered to the residents of our Michiana community. The “Y” serves families from a number of surrounding counties. The funds raised through this event go to support programs for these many families.
There are two easy ways to vote for Team Tapastrie. You can text Chef8 to 71777 or visit the website. Team Tapastrie would greatly appreciate your support and vote. Remember the Chicago election slogan of bygone days: “Vote early and vote often.”
