Last week, for the very first time, I had the distinct pleasure of participating in a wine tasting at Tapastrie restaurant in downtown South Bend.
Tapastrie is located at 103 W. Colfax Avenue. The building is on the corner of Michigan Street and Colfax Avenue next to the Morris Performing Arts Center. It is in the location that the former Vine restaurant occupied for years. My good friend Tom Welsh is a partner in this unique restaurant and serves as its general manager. Tom is also a level two Sommelier and spearheads the wine program at Tapastrie.
Tapastrie is a tapas (small plate) Mediterranean-themed restaurant with an interesting wine list featuring Old World wines with a focus on Spanish, French and Italian wines. The wine list has some depth to it and offers a wide variety to choose from.
The restaurant has been open since the end of 2015. The space went through an extra-long renovation in order to offer an informal, vibrant and Old World setting for its patrons.
On the several occasions I have dined there the food and service have been good. The rather large, interesting and Wine Spectator award-winning wine list pairs well with the menu. You can see both the food menu and wine list by going to Tapastrie’s website.
The evening’s wine tasting was held in the newly renovated wine cellar located in the lower level of the restaurant. Tom Welsh featured what he referred to as “a grab bag of wines” with three whites and four reds, all Old World wines. It was a great selection.
I brought our just released 90/100 point 2015 Glenwood Cellars Sauvignon Blanc, our 90/100 point 2012 Glenwood Cellars Chardonnay, our 2014 Glenwood Cellars Pinot Noir and our 2012 Glenwood Cellars Cabernet Sauvignon. I also offered our 2010 Bordeaux-style Tiedemann Signature Series Red Wine.
Here is what Tom Welsh had to say about the tasting:
“Tapastrie was delighted to have Tiedemann Wines featured in our recent wine tasting and tapas buffet event. The event was great fun, not least for being able to spend some time with my friend Carl! We’re proud to have three of the Glenwood Cellars wines and the Tiedemann Signature Series Red on our list regularly, all of which are typical of the quality and value of our award-winning wine list (shameless plug).”
The wines paired well with the buffet of Mediterranean-style foods that Chef Tony Nafrady had prepared for the evening’s festivities. I am a big fan of his lamb meatballs and garlic shrimp.
As a special treat we were entertained throughout the evening by Juke Fox, a father and daughter musical duo featuring Jim Fuchs accompanying his daughter Anne Fuchs. Anne is a classically trained soprano with an amazing voice. It was special to have the opportunity to listen to her sing.
I would recommend you give Tapastrie a try if you haven’t already. Don’t forget to order a bottle of wine from the selection of my wines that are featured on the wine list. I would also recommend that you call ahead for a reservation at 574-232-9200.
