I often get asked the question: “I am going out to Napa, do you have any suggestions on things to do while I am there?” As a matter of fact, I do.
One of the places I hang out in Napa (albeit for different reasons than you might) is the last working winery in historic downtown Napa, Vinoce and Twenty Rows Wines owned by Brian and Lori Nuss. The winery is located at 880 Vallejo Street, just a few blocks northwest of the Napa Valley Wine Train Station.
As many of you know, Brian is the winemaker for our Glenwood Cellars Cabernet and Sauvignon Blanc. So when I am at their winery, it is to blend our wines or talk shop (for me to learn a lot more about the wine business) with Brian. For more than 25 years Brian has been growing grapes and making wines and his success is evident when you taste his many wines and review his many awards.
For an example, Brian’s Twenty Rows Cabernet was selected in 2006 and again in 2009 as the Cabernet of the Year (in the $20 or less category) by Food & Wine magazine. The Mount Veeder Cabernet Franc has also won many gold awards at wine tasting competitions. Currently the Nuss family makes seven wines all together. Under the Vinoce label they have three premium wines which are of very limited production:
- The Vinoce Mount Veeder Estate Cabernet Franc blend (a personal favorite)
- The Vinoce Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve
- The Vinoce Sauvignon Blanc
Under the Twenty Rows label they make four wines:
- The Twenty Rows Cabernet
- The Twenty Rows Grappler (a blended zinfandel)
- The Twenty Rows Merlot
- The Twenty Rows Sauvignon Blanc
In the winery you’ll find among the tanks and barrel racks a delightful tasting room, wine lounge and art gallery. The facility is open from 11 am to 5 pm Tuesdays through Saturdays and on Sunday and Mondays by appointment. It is always a good idea to call a few days in advance of your visit to let them know you are stopping by. While you taste the wine, I suggest you ask them about their wine clubs. They offer a variety of options created to suit everyone’s personal taste. The winery number is 707-265-7750.
I highly recommend you take the opportunity when you are in Napa to taste the Nuss family’s many outstanding wines. I would be more than happy to arrange a private tasting if you give me a little notice to do so.
If you have tasted any of these wines or have been to the tasting room let us know your thoughts.
