I am very pleased to announce that Wine Enthusiast magazine has awarded our 2013 Glenwood Cellars Sauvignon Blanc a rating of 87 points on its 50-100 point rating scale.
For those of you not familiar with the 100-point wine rating scale, it is a method professional wine tasters use to rate or grade a wine. I am not going to get into the pros and cons of this system now…we will save that for another post. All I will say for now that not everyone thinks the scale is fair and accurate.
Here is how the Wine Enthusiast 100-point wine scoring scale breaks down:
98-100 points Classic; The pinnacle of quality
94-97 points Superb; A great achievement
90-93 points Excellent; Highly recommended
87-89 points Very Good; Often good value – well recommended
83-86 points Good; Suitable for everyday consumption
80-82 points Acceptable; Can be enjoyed in casual settings
50 – 79 points Unacceptable
Our 2013 Glenwood Cellars Sauvignon Blanc was our first Sauvignon Blanc effort with winemaker Kent Humphrey of Eric Kent Wine Cellars. Kent lives in Santa Rosa, California, in Sonoma County. Kent and Eric Kent Wine Cellars were recommended to us by our Napa Valley friend, Bruce Devlin of Three Clicks Wines. We will be forever grateful for that recommendation and introduction. Kent is also the winemaker for our 2012 Glenwood Cellars Chardonnay and our 2013 Glenwood Cellars Pinot Noir. We are waiting on our scores for those wines from Wine Enthusiast as well.
Working with Kent to develop the flavor profile of those three wines has been enjoyable and great fun. My job, as vintner, is to explain to our winemakers the flavor profile I want to achieve in the wines we produce. We do that by tasting various wines and discussing how they do or might match my concept.
In the case of our Sauvignon Blanc, Kent found some good Sauvignon Blanc wine in the bulk market and proceeded to make an initial blend for us to sample. With a little tweaking and Kent’s guidance we achieved the blend I wanted.
The 2013 Glenwood Cellars Sauvignon Blanc is a blend of two Sonoma Coast vineyards. One part of the final blend is from a vineyard in the middle of the Russian River Valley and the second part of the blend is from a second vineyard on the eastern side of Sonoma Mountain. The wine is 100% tank-fermented and then aged in neutral oak barrels for three months prior to bottling.
Here are Kent’s tasting notes for the wine:
“Crystal clear, light straw in color, the expressive and complex nose leads with aromas of fresh cut pear, lemon-lime, chamomile, honeysuckle, and touches of marzipan and sandalwood. The flavors pick up on the lemon-lime, adding pink grapefruit, kiwi, honeydew melon and white peach into the mix, all completed by crisp and refreshing acidity and a tantalizingly long finish. The perfect match for seafood, poultry, salads, a cheese and fruit plate, or just the back porch on a hot summer day!”
And this is what the reviewer at Wine Enthusiast said about the 2013 Glenwood Cellars Sauvignon Blanc:
“Subdued in just-ripe cantaloupe, this light wine dances in lemon, lime and grapefruit, skirting the line between delightful and sour. Mid-weight, it allows a touch of oak on the back palate to intermingle with the fruit.”
The wine is available locally at many restaurants and package stores including McCarthy’s on the Riverwalk, Lucchese’s Italian Restaurant, Chalet Party Shoppes and Citywide Liquors.
If you get a chance to try it, I would appreciate your thoughts and comments on the wine. They are always desired – good or bad. It helps me make better wine if I understand your expectations.
