The 2015 Glenwood Cellars Sauvignon Blanc

July 12, 2017 / Carl Tiedemann / Wine

I am very excited to announce the release of our 2015 Glenwood Cellars Sauvignon Blanc. For the 2015 vintage I have again teamed up with Sonoma Coast Winemaker Kent Humphrey to produce this outstanding Sauvignon Blanc wine. This is the third vintage I have produced with Kent and they just keep getting better.

The blend is 100% Sauvignon Blanc from vines on the eastern side of Sonoma Mountain overlooking Glen Ellen. This striking Sonoma Coast Sauvignon Blanc is crafted from a combination of various Sauvignon Blanc vine clones including the well-known Sauvignon Musqué clone.

The wine was 95% tank fermented, 5% barrel fermented and aged for six months prior to bottling. It was aged another four months in glass before its release.

My Thoughts on the Wine
The 2015 Glenwood Cellars Sauvignon Blanc is a classic Sauvignon Blanc. It is a crisp wine with wonderful aromas of melon that transfer to a variety of fruit flavors on the palate. As is my style, the wine has a long and impressive finish with a balance of texture and acidity. The wine has a pleasant mouth feel that survives long after the initial finish. It is still a young wine and will continue to improve with age. It is a very refreshing wine that will pair well with green salads, seafood and fish.

Winemaker’s Tasting Notes:
“Explosive aromas of fresh peaches, ripe cantaloupe and honeydew melon are given added allure by hints of coriander, chamomile, basil and lime zest. The palate follows through with flavors of sweet pink grapefruit, lemon-lime and kiwi with a richly textured body and refreshing acidity for a wonderfully long finish. Satisfying on every level, this is a perfect match for any table or just sitting poolside on a sunny afternoon. Yields were extremely low in 2015, so production was tiny. Get it while you can!”

I am also pleased to announce with the wine’s release that Wine Enthusiast magazine has rated the wine at 90 out of 100 points. This is considered to be an “Excellent” wine and highly recommended by the Wine Enthusiast reviewer. I appreciate your continued support of our Glenwood Cellars wines.

Congratulations on the excellent rating given to this wine, Carl. I have long been a lover of Sauvignon Blanc. A few years ago California makers seemed to have lost their way with SB. There seemed to be a race to see whose wine could be the most grape-fruity. I love crisp white wines, which, I guess means that I appreciate the acid in them. At times, though, I thought they were grinding up grapefruit peels, pith and all, and adding them in. Fortunately, California SBs from the last few vintages have seemed to move in the right direction for me. They seem to have the right amount of acid — and, as often as not, I would characterize that acid as citric — but they have toned it way back to create better balance.

Hello Mark. Like you I am not a big fan of the grape-fruity Sauvignon Blancs nor am I a fan of the New Zealand-style acidic SBs. Like you I am looking for balanced yet crisp wine with mild fruit and a long finish. I think that style wine pairs much better with food and is more pleasant to taste alone.

All of that said, it isn’t always easy to make a Sauvignon Blanc that meets those qualifications. But I think we may be approaching those standards with this wine.

Thanks for your continued support and comments.

      Cheers
