Tasting Notes – Melon Influence
As we have discussed many times there are any number of things that influence the flavor profile (aromas, taste and finish) of the wines we drink.
Items such as:
- Type of grape
- Alcohol levels
- Winemaking process
- Oak barrels
- Aging process
These are just a few of the many.
As a wine develops it takes on certain characteristics, aromas, flavor development and weight. One of the many flavors that wines develop is the flavor of melons. There are, of course, many types of melon including watermelon and cantaloupe, but the most prevalent in wine is generally the honeydew melon. The flavor profile of a ripe honeydew melon is generally fruity, fresh and sweet.
Rosé wines typically have hints of melon as do many full-bodied white wines…particularly white Italian wines such as Pinot Grigio and some Prosecco wines.
Other wines that typically have melon flavors are Pinot Blanc, Riesling and Chardonnay. The next time you taste wine see if you can smell or taste a melon flavor. It is also good to keep tasting notes on the flavor profiles of the wines you taste. This will provide you with information which you can associate with certain types of grapes or wine. This allows you to do comparisons from one wine to another.
