Does wine have sugar in it? Yes, there is a certain amount of sugar in all wines. The winemaker will determine just how much sugar there is. The type of wine makes a difference as to the sugar level, as well.
There are several factors that contribute to the sugar level in wine. Wine is made from grapes which naturally contain a certain amount of sugar. The sweetness level of all wines is determined by how long the winemaker ferments the wine (fermentation is the process where grapes “must” transform into wine).
During the fermentation process, yeast converts the grapes’ natural sugars to alcohol and carbon dioxide. What does this mean for a wine’s sugar level? When less sugar is fermented, more will stay in the wine. Also, the alcohol content of sweeter wines will typically be lower. After the wine making process is over, the remaining sugar in the wine is called “residual sugar” or RS. The RS of a wine is typically measured in grams.
According to the United States Department of Agriculture, a five-ounce glass of red table wine typically contains about 0.9 total grams of sugar. They report that a glass of Chardonnay contains 1.4 grams. A three-ounce glass of dessert wine can contain as much as 7 grams of sugar. These numbers are the normal standards. However, these numbers may vary depending on the specific wine you are drinking (due to where the grapes are grown, how the wine is made, etc.)
Let us take a look at what all this means. One gram of sugar is 0.035274 ounces of sugar. One teaspoon of sugar equals 4 to 5 grams of sugar, five grams of carbohydrates and approximately 20 calories.
If you add the sugar to other ingredients in wine it is reported the calories in a glass of red table wine will be between 120 and 130 calories. The American Heart Association recommends limiting a woman’s sugar intake to no more than 6 teaspoons (about 25 grams or 100 calories) per day. The recommendation for men is no more than 9 teaspoons (36 grams, 150 calories) per day. If you are really watching your sugars, just be aware of the amount in your favorite wines and limit yourself depending on the type and sugar content.
