Mrs. Tiedemann and I are very pleased to inform everyone that we have received our construction and excise permits for the 530 Wine Bar. Further, construction is now underway.
I have written before about this exciting new venture, and as we get further into the project, Emilie and I have gotten even more excited about the project. I have been working on our business plan and am embarrassed to say the bar may be open before I get it done. Allow me to share several important parts of the business plan.
Our mission at the 530 Wine Bar is to establish and operate a wine bar based on a reputation for providing its customers with wines that represent excellence in taste, at a reasonable price and are served in a comfortable and refined atmosphere that lends itself to networking and socializing by our customers.
We will continually improve service to a point that it meets or exceeds customer’s expectations.
Emilie and I have been working on purchasing all sorts of interior items such as chandeliers, wall sconces, wine lockers (which I will speak about later on), doors, hardware and bar items. Stan Minden, our Wine Director, and I have had great fun tasting wines with distributors searching for just the right wines to be included on our wine list. As the saying goes “it’s a tough job but someone has to do it.”
Below is our preliminary wine list. Please give us your thoughts on this wine list.

We are also working on our food menu and will give you a look at that in the near future. Chef Chad Coryn has completed a preliminary menu and it looks great.
Some folks have asked me what the difference is between a wine bar and a restaurant. The answer: a wine bar focuses on serving wine for immediate consumption. While a restaurant has a focus on serving food for consumption. Since we are in the wine business and do not have a tasting room in Napa Valley, we thought that a wine bar in Elkhart could serve as a tasting room for our wines as well.
As the name would imply, a wine bar’s primary focus is on wine. They offer wine events, such as wine tastings, for their patrons. They offer wine flights and various types of wine on a wine list. Most wine bars sell wines for customers to take home with them. The 530 Wine Bar will offer all of these items.
One of the other items we are working on is the selection of wine lockers for the wine bar. We plan on having 36-40 lockers which will hold 12 bottles per locker. Lockers will rent for $300.00 per year. It is our plan to have a wine locker tasting every four months. We will invite three to four wine distributors in to have a wine tasting of their various wines for our wine locker patrons. Wine locker patrons will be able to purchase the wines at a discount from our standard wine list price for their lockers.
We hope to open the 530 Wine Bar sometime in August. I’ll be writing more about it in the coming weeks so stay tuned.
